OK. So. Let me get this straight. The same folks that bring us organized labor, Wal*Mart hit squads, higher taxes, massive entitlements, Brokeback Mountain, eco-terrorists, Joel Stein, moveon.org, and the ACLU are now suggesting that they hold the keys to American competitiveness? This from an AP wire story today about Ed Rendell and the Democratic Governors Association plan to rescue American competitiveness:
…there is no time to waste because the nation’s competitors are catching up and passing the United States.
"If we don’t do something about our competitive edge and do
something about it soon, America will continue to spiral downward to
the point where … we may not recover," Rendell said.
I agree 1000% with Rendell’s statement that America’s competitors are catching up and passing the United States. I also know that it is the democratic party that systematically gutted this competitiveness. Do democratic operatives really think anybody will believe this?

Okay, I’m intrigued. Can you give me an example of how the democratic party “gutted” competitiveness? Seems to me that any one political party (or government) can’t single-handly “gut” anything. It takes a lot of factors, including the decline of our education system and the entitlement mindset our country has developed over the last 60 year or so. (“I deserve to make $35/hour for a line mfr job” “I deserve to have three cars and satellite t.v.” “I deserve to do whatever I want with my lifestyle and health and still have the best health care at an affordable price.”
Further, we’re now living in a country where a GOP conservative “CEO” president has taken us from a surplus to a record deficit. And we continue to borrow money at a frightening rate from the Chinese and others. Seems to me that sort of fiscal irresponsibility also leads to problems with competitiveness. And so on.
So? Examples please (with figures and data points.)
Hi Mary,
A few examples: unions, entitlements, regulations, and taxes.
I too, do not like the deficit and I have issues with several recent developments in the Bush administration.
But the gist of this post is my perception of the honesty behind Rendel’s effort. When it comes to issues like defense and competiveness Democrats need to earn these positions with their actions over time.
To me, this is one more example of the Democrats trying to pander to the middle. Few people will believe it, and I don’t think it will work.
BTW, like your blog.
